On a dark night out here the Big Dipper is not always where you want it. In autumn its handle sinks low, behind a ridge or drowned in the last ground glow, and the usual habit of running its outer stars up to Polaris quietly fails you. That is when the far side of the sky earns its keep. Opposite the Dipper, across the north pole, rides a flattened W of five stars, and when one pattern is low the other is riding high.
That is the pair's real trick. Cassiopeia and the Big Dipper sit on opposite sides of Polaris and wheel around it together, like two riders on opposite sides of a Ferris wheel. Whatever the hour or the season, at least one of them is well up. Split the gap between the two and you land on the north star, and with it, north; the middle of the W points roughly the same way. Name the five stars if you like (Segin, Ruchbah, the one old charts label Navi, Schedar, and Caph), but you do not need to. The shape is the tool.
There is a tidy claim that rides along with this, that both patterns are circumpolar from here and never set, and it is only half right. A star stays up all night if its declination clears about +55.5 degrees at this latitude. Cassiopeia's five run from roughly +56 to +64 degrees, so they clear it, and the W genuinely does not set. The Dipper does not all make the cut. Its handle tip, Alkaid at +49.3 degrees, and part of the bowl drop below the true northern horizon on autumn evenings. The whole Dipper only stays up farther north, near +40 degrees latitude. So the Dipper going low is not you losing track of it. It is the Dipper actually setting, in part, while Cassiopeia holds station.
The W is worth more than a compass, though. The band of the Milky Way runs straight through it. On an autumn night with the W high overhead, that faint glowing river, plain from ground this dark and simply gone from any city, is the disk of our own galaxy seen edge-on, and this stretch is the sightline outward, through the outer arms, away from the crowded center. Sweep just off the W toward Perseus and the naked eye picks up a brighter smudge; binoculars break it into the Double Cluster, two knots of stars set into the band.
Watch across a few hours and the whole figure tips over. The W you found after dusk stands on end and reads as an M by the small hours, and nothing up there has moved. The ground under you has. Few things show the turning of the planet as plainly.
Find the W tonight, note which way it leans, and look again before dawn. It will have swung around to an M.
